2011: Wrestler of the year: CM Punk. I know some people are starting to turn on him because he is becoming cheesier and cornier, but in my opinion, this guy deserves this award. He had good performances in both the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches. He had two good matches with Randy Orton and a really good Last Man Standing match. A solid match with Rey Mysterio at Capitol Punishment, and of course two legit great matches with John Cena at both Money in the Bank and Summerslam. Like him or hate him, he is a damn fine wrestler and one of the best today. Tag Team of the year: The Briscoes. WWE’s tag division sucks, and TNA’s tag division has been quite poor this year. ROH is the only company out of the big 3 that actually has a good tag team division. The Briscoes have been entertaining as hell since their heel turn this year, and their feud with All Night Express is one of the best feuds of the year, so yeah Dem Boys are the tag team of the year without a shadow of a doubt. Match of the year: John Cena vs. CM Punk at Money in the Bank. This match was a classic and one of my all-time favorite matches ever. I know some people will say Undertaker vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania 27 is the match of the year, which don’t get me wrong, was a really good match, but to me Cena vs. Punk had better build-up, better action, better storytelling, better crowd, and an overall better atmosphere. It’s a match that will be talked about for years and years to come. Feud of the year: Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes. This may seem like a really weird pick since it didn’t last more than three months, but I really dug this feud. The way it started, the segment with Dusty, the whole character development of Cody Rhodes, and the matches were all good and really made for a solid mid card feud. I’d say The Briscoes vs. ANX, and John Cena vs. CM Punk are close runner-ups, though. Most Improved: Randy Orton. Last year, I called Randy Orton the most overrated wrestler of the year, but this year, he has improved quite a bit. He has delivered on PPV a lot more consistently, and actually had a couple MOTYCs with Christian. He also has had some really stand out matches on TV such as the street fight with Cody Rhodes and Kane, along with the steel cage match with Christian, and also has had a few good TV matches with Dolph Ziggler this year as well. Definitely an improvement from last year, where he only had a handful of matches that I would consider good. Rookie of the year: Alberto Del Rio. He technically debuted last year, but this was his first full year with the WWE, so I’m going consider him. What a year this guy has had. Kayfabe-wise, he has won Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and won two WWE titles. As a performer, he has had some good matches this year. He had a few matches with Christian earlier in the year that were good, and his ladder match with Christian was really good. He then had a good 3-way match at Hell in a Cell, a fun Last Man Standing match with Cena, a pretty good match with Punk at Survivor Series, and from what I hear a good match at TLC as well. The dude has a bright future ahead of him. Most overrated: TNA’s entire main event scene until after BFG. Shit has TNA had some awful main events this year. Mr. Anderson sucks ass in the ring, on the mic, and despite what many people believe, the guy doesn’t have any charisma. Sting, who I respect, but come on. The world champion in 2011? As the Miz would say, really? The fucker should be retired. I know people love Kurt Angle, but the dude has lost not just a step or two, but he’s not even good anymore. And don’t even get me started on Jeff Hardy… That Against All Odds match with Anderson was a bunch of horse shit and Jeff botched the finish to a PPV main event. As Jorge would say, fuck this company! Most underrated: John Morrison. He went basically from future world champion at the start of the year to jobber to the stars by the end of the year. Whatever the reason behind him getting de-pushed is, I hate it. Morrison showed a lot of promise at the start of the year really taking The Miz to the limit and nearly winning the title, and then having two stand out performances at Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, then it kind of all went down hill from there. It’s sad that a guy with that much talent and potential couldn’t have been used more properly.

Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels WWE Survivor Series 1992
This was a really enjoyable match in the final 10 minutes or so. The start of the match is kind of dull and pointless (Bret working over Shawn’s arm for it to lead to nothing), but after they kicked it into the next gear, they had a really good, action-packed, back-and-forth segment with some good near falls and the crowd getting really into it. Also the missile drop kick turned into a Sharpshooter finish was really good.

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart WWE Wrestlemania X
This was a fantastic match and one of the best WWE PPV openers of all-time. Owen Hart does a tremendous job as a heel with his taunting and using every heel cliché in the book. While Owen is being a great heel, Bret is being a great face, with him trying to keep it clean until he just snaps and slaps Owen, which got a big pop. The knee injury after the outside dive was smartly played by both and became a pivotal portion of the match. Owen applies big time submissions like a Figure Four Leg Lock and even Bret’s own Sharpshooter to really aggravate the knee. Bret has a great comeback from the knee injury, and the fluke finish for Owen was the best booked finish for this kind of match.

Bret Hart vs. Diesel WWE Royal Rumble 1995
While Kevin Nash/Diesel isn’t a great worker, he was certainly carryable, and when he was with the right person he could have a MOTYC type match. This was one of those examples, however, this is not a great match, but still really good match and probably Diesel’s second best match in the WWE. This match had Bret playing the heel and all the focus on Nash’s knee is great throughout especially Bret smashing a chair against it and doing tons of heel-like tactics. The interference and finish are kind of lame, but I enjoyed the match enough with Bret’s constant attack on Nash’s knee and it really makes the viewer get behind Nash. So although if it had a better finish and no interference, it could have been a legit great match, it does make you want want to see a rematch between the two.

The Undertaker vs. The Big Show WWE Survivor Series 2008 (Casket Match)
This match was good, but a bit on the disappointing side. There was some good brawling at the start, and there was some cool spots like the leg drop through the announce table. However, some of the dramatic moments with the casket felt kind of awkward like Show noticeably closing the casket door slowly to make sure Undertaker would get his foot in on time. The final couple of minutes were good, though, and the finish was original.

Chris Jericho vs. John Cena WWE Survivor Series 2008
This was better than I remembered it being. At first the match is kind of dull, but there are some good moments. I especially liked Cena double thinking about going for the top rope leg drop when that very move was what caused his neck injury. Jericho works over the neck, lets Cena get a few short comebacks in before cutting him off, which is all fine. The final few minutes turned into a fun back-and-forth affair with some good near falls and Cena hitting the top rope leg drop that he was afraid to use earlier was cool because of the meaning behind it. Solid main event match.

Stan Hansen vs. Hulk Hogan on April 14, 1990
It’s so weird to see Hulk Hogan doing drop toe-holds. The match turns ugly quick when Hogan rams Hansen’s head into the ring post. Hansen gets busted open and Hogan opens up the wound some more by ramming Hansen’s head against a ring bell, repeatedly punching him in the face, and stomping on his face. Hansen gets a comeback mid-way through with a shoulder tackle that got a huge pop. Hansen got revenge on Hogan by bashing a chair over Hogan’s head, busting Hogan open. In the midst of selling the chair shot, a fan tries to help Hogan up, when Hansen sees this, Hansen swings a punch at them. Luckily the fan was able to move out of the way just in time, but that was a great heel moment. The final minute or so is fun with them teasing the finish by making it seem like it was going be a typical formula Hogan finish. Good, fun match.
