My thoughts
My 2011 Wrestling Awards

2011:

Wrestler of the year: CM Punk. I know some people are starting to turn on him because he is becoming cheesier and cornier, but in my opinion, this guy deserves this award. He had good performances in both the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches. He had two good matches with Randy Orton and a really good Last Man Standing match. A solid match with Rey Mysterio at Capitol Punishment, and of course two legit great matches with John Cena at both Money in the Bank and Summerslam. Like him or hate him, he is a damn fine wrestler and one of the best today.

Tag Team of the year: The Briscoes. WWE’s tag division sucks, and TNA’s tag division has been quite poor this year. ROH is the only company out of the big 3 that actually has a good tag team division. The Briscoes have been entertaining as hell since their heel turn this year, and their feud with All Night Express is one of the best feuds of the year, so yeah Dem Boys are the tag team of the year without a shadow of a doubt.

Match of the year: John Cena vs. CM Punk at Money in the Bank. This match was a classic and one of my all-time favorite matches ever. I know some people will say Undertaker vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania 27 is the match of the year, which don’t get me wrong, was a really good match, but to me Cena vs. Punk had better build-up, better action, better storytelling, better crowd, and an overall better atmosphere. It’s a match that will be talked about for years and years to come.

Feud of the year: Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes. This may seem like a really weird pick since it didn’t last more than three months, but I really dug this feud. The way it started, the segment with Dusty, the whole character development of Cody Rhodes, and the matches were all good and really made for a solid mid card feud. I’d say The Briscoes vs. ANX, and John Cena vs. CM Punk are close runner-ups, though.

Most Improved: Randy Orton. Last year, I called Randy Orton the most overrated wrestler of the year, but this year, he has improved quite a bit. He has delivered on PPV a lot more consistently, and actually had a couple MOTYCs with Christian. He also has had some really stand out matches on TV such as the street fight with Cody Rhodes and Kane, along with the steel cage match with Christian, and also has had a few good TV matches with Dolph Ziggler this year as well. Definitely an improvement from last year, where he only had a handful of matches that I would consider good.

Rookie of the year: Alberto Del Rio. He technically debuted last year, but this was his first full year with the WWE, so I’m going consider him. What a year this guy has had. Kayfabe-wise, he has won Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and won two WWE titles. As a performer, he has had some good matches this year. He had a few matches with Christian earlier in the year that were good, and his ladder match with Christian was really good. He then had a good 3-way match at Hell in a Cell, a fun Last Man Standing match with Cena, a pretty good match with Punk at Survivor Series, and from what I hear a good match at TLC as well. The dude has a bright future ahead of him.

Most overrated: TNA’s entire main event scene until after BFG. Shit has TNA had some awful main events this year. Mr. Anderson sucks ass in the ring, on the mic, and despite what many people believe, the guy doesn’t have any charisma. Sting, who I respect, but come on. The world champion in 2011? As the Miz would say, really? The fucker should be retired. I know people love Kurt Angle, but the dude has lost not just a step or two, but he’s not even good anymore. And don’t even get me started on Jeff Hardy… That Against All Odds match with Anderson was a bunch of horse shit and Jeff botched the finish to a PPV main event. As Jorge would say, fuck this company!

Most underrated: John Morrison. He went basically from future world champion at the start of the year to jobber to the stars by the end of the year. Whatever the reason behind him getting de-pushed is, I hate it. Morrison showed a lot of promise at the start of the year really taking The Miz to the limit and nearly winning the title, and then having two stand out performances at Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, then it kind of all went down hill from there. It’s sad that a guy with that much talent and potential couldn’t have been used more properly.
